Overview
Unmuss records what you say and turns it into writing. That means two things have to be clear from the start: what leaves your device, and what we keep. This page answers both.
The short version: you do not need an account, your notes are stored on your device and in your own iCloud, and audio is sent to our server only to be transcribed and rewritten — it is not archived afterwards.
Information We Collect
- No account, no profile. Unmuss does not ask for your name, email address, phone number or password.
- No advertising or tracking SDKs. The app contains no third-party analytics, advertising or attribution frameworks.
- No sale of personal data. We do not sell, rent or trade information about you.
Voice Recordings and Transcription
- Live transcription is on-device. As you speak, the app turns your voice into text using Apple's speech recognition on your iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Audio is sent to our server for rewriting. When you ask Unmuss to transcribe and refine a recording, the audio file and the on-device text are uploaded to our backend, where the speech is transcribed and the resulting text is rewritten by AI models. Our backend does this work using third-party AI service providers acting on our behalf — see AI Service Providers.
- Audio is not retained. Uploaded audio is processed in memory and deleted once processing finishes. We do not keep an archive of your recordings, and we do not have a library of things you have said.
- Text you keep stays with you. Both the original transcript and the rewritten version are stored in the app on your device and synced through your own iCloud account.
Where Your Notes Live
- On your device: notes, versions, audio files, preferences and app settings are stored locally using Apple's standard app storage.
- In your iCloud: Unmuss uses Apple's
CloudKitto sync across your own devices. The data lives in your private iCloud database — we cannot read it. - Your control: you can delete individual notes in the app, or remove the app's iCloud data from Settings > Apple ID > iCloud at any time.
Anonymous Identifiers
To keep track of your remaining transcription quota and your purchases, the app sends an anonymous identifier with each request to our server:
- App UUID: a random identifier generated by the app on first launch and stored in the iOS Keychain. It contains nothing about you and is not connected to your name, email or Apple ID.
- CloudKit user record ID: an opaque identifier provided by Apple when you are signed in to iCloud, used so that your quota travels with your Apple account rather than with one device.
- Platform: a short label (
iosorwatchos) so the server can return the right response.
Location and Weather
- Optional: if you grant permission, Unmuss can attach the place — and the weather at that place — to a recording, so you can remember where an idea came from.
- Stored with your note: that information is saved alongside the note on your device and in your iCloud. It is not sent to advertising or analytics services.
- Revocable: you can turn location access off at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
Hands-Free Capture
If you use Siri or a Shortcut to start a recording while driving, the request is handled by Apple's Siri and Shortcuts frameworks. The resulting recording follows exactly the same path as any other recording: it is stored on your device, and its audio is uploaded only when you ask for transcription and rewriting.
Third-Party AI Service Providers
Unmuss uses no third-party analytics, advertising or crash-reporting SDKs. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone for their own purposes.
Speech-to-text and AI rewriting are carried out by third-party AI service providers that act as our processors. When you ask for a recording to be transcribed and rewritten, your audio and the text derived from it are sent to one of these providers so that it can do the work you asked for. They receive that data for that single purpose: they are not permitted to use it for their own purposes, to train their models on it, or to keep it once the request is complete. Wherever we engage a provider, we require it to protect your data with the same or equal protection as described in this policy, and we remain responsible for it.
The processing steps, the data each one involves and the conditions we place on the providers that carry them out are described in detail at AI Service Providers. That page is kept separate from this policy because infrastructure changes: this policy always states what kind of processing happens to your data and the safeguards that apply, and that page always states who carries it out and under what terms. If we move work from one provider to another of the same kind, the data involved, its purpose, our restrictions and your rights stay exactly the same, and this policy does not need to change with it.
Your Permission
Before your first recording is uploaded for transcription and rewriting, Unmuss asks for your permission and states on that same screen what will be sent and who it will be sent to. Nothing leaves your device until you agree. If you do not agree, nothing is uploaded and no processing takes place.
You can withdraw your permission at any time by writing to [email protected]. After that, transcription and rewriting stop, and everything you have already recorded remains on your device and in your own iCloud.
In-App Purchases
Credit packs and subscriptions are sold through Apple's StoreKit. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card details. We receive the transaction receipt so that the purchased credits can be added to your quota.
Data Retention
There is no server-side copy of your notes to retain. Audio exists on our servers only for the moments it takes to process a request. Your notes and their versions remain on your device and in your iCloud until you delete them.
Children's Privacy
Unmuss is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and because there are no accounts, we do not hold identifying information about any user.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with an updated date at the top. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
